REC Continues to Impact Kids Who Need it Most

It hasn't been easy, but despite school closures and social distancing requirements, REC has stepped up to the plate to continue serving our students and offering support to families.

REC Administrative staff came back from Spring Break ready to tackle the job of figuring out how to do what we do - offer academic support and foster social and emotional growth for at-risk kids - in a very different environment.

With a bit of brainstorming, some online staff training and a lot of reaching out to REC families, the plan came together.
REC staff are spending one-half hour per day, four days per week, one-on-one with each student, assisting them with homework or working on skills like reading and math.  Group meet-ups are planned, allowing the kids an opportunity to connect and engage with each other.  (The picture below is the schedule for one day at only one of REC's nine sites.)

We also added a COVID-19 Community Resource page to the REC website, www.REC4kids.com, to help families access information on everything from SD 51's emergency meals, to how to connect to online learning (many do not have internet access), to where to find social and emotional support services.

Serving our kids and their families is our first priority.

As always, THANK YOU for supporting REC and our mission to help Grand Junction kids!
Support Beyond Academics

76% of REC's students qualify for the School District 51 Free/Reduced Lunch Program.  Now that families have lost incomes and kids no longer have access to food at school or at REC programming, food insecurity is a larger problem.

Thanks to the #GJStrong Fund, created by the City of Grand Junction and administered by the Western Colorado Community Foundation, REC is able to address our families' food insecurity through partnerships with the Community Food Bank, Kids Aid Backpack Program and Clifton Christian Church.  We are distributing over 250 food boxes and bags each week!  We are also able to include gift cards from an anonymous donor to help families meet other basic needs.

As an extra bonus, REC Site Managers add activities, supplies for school work and fun projects to the food deliveries to engage and stay connected with their students during these unprecented times.

Delivering food to our students gives us a chance to have a more personal interaction (at a distance) with our students and families to show how much we care.
It's been an adjustment to only "see" our kids from a distance but we feel fortunate to be able to continue to support them.

Thank you to all our REC Staff for the extra effort you are putting in to supporting ALL aspects of our students' well-being!
Supporting REC Under the CARES Act
REC is always thankful for the generous support we get from our friends in the Grand Junction community!

We are excited to see that donors will benefit from the Federal relief bill known as the CARES Act (Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Secrutiy Act).  In an effort to assist non-profits who are providing extra support within their communities, individuals and business who donate to REC can benefit from this bill in the following ways:

All donors can claim a one time above-the-line deduction for contributions up to $300 in the 2020 tax year.
*  For those who itemize their taxes, contributions are no longer subject to a limited percent of adjusted gross income.
*  The Corporate adjusted gross income percentage limit for cash contributions has been raised from 10% to 25%.

As always, check with your tax professional to confirm what the best tax strategy is for your situation.

Again, thank you for your support of REC and our mission to help kids in the Grand Valley who need it most!
